Dear Participants,

On behalf of Yayasan Inisiatif Dagang Hijau as a facilitator of the High Level Meeting (HLM) on Green Investment Blueprint for Papua and West Papua, we are writing this letter to thank you for your important contribution and your precious time, during the HLM that was held on February 26th and 27th of 2020 at The Swiss Bel Hotel, Sorong, Papua.

The event was a great success with over 250 people in attendance including The Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment, Mr. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan who led the way as he gave a great mandate to further concretely realise such investment in key value chains and carbon financing. The Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Cooperatives and Small-Medium Enterprises, Chairman of Indonesia Investment, and Vice Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, along with The Governor of west Papua and Vice Governor of Papua were actively involved in discussions, negotiations, and sharing with key business leaders. Six Deputy Ministers, Director Generals, and Special Staff to The President of Indonesia, along with 45 companies and business leaders were also present.

The generous time you gave in support of this event has highlighted the commitment from the Indonesian government and business leaders for no more deforestation in these two provinces, along with a commitment for no more palm oil expansion. A promise that business will only be done in these provinces if it supports forest and environmental protection and social inclusion. A joint taskforce is to be created to support different green commodities and investment including cocoa, coffee,  seaweed, ecotourism, and carbon financing. Carbon mechanism needs and will be developed further so it can be used to protect the forest and help local people.

Thank you for your participation and support in creating an event to learn, share resource’s and better understand the needs to be done to further protect and advance these two provinces. We expect that this event will open vital conversations to help Papua and West Papua, and we are excited by the participation and support of so many diverse sectors. Thank you again for supporting this event.

about the event
Together with the provincial governments of Papua and West Papua, we are working to develop sustainable businesses in one of Indonesia’s most biodiverse and beautiful locations. We are inviting business leaders, donors and NGOs from around the world to be part of this exciting mission.

The High-Level Meeting in Sorong on the 27th of February 2020 will provide a forum for leading representatives from the private sector, along with non-profit organisations, conservation experts, investors and financial institutions from around the world. Here, they will discuss a blueprint to ‘Build Business for Papua and West Papua’.

This is a landmark opportunity to create, support and implement a Green Investment Blueprint for Papua and West Papua, built on a portfolio of sustainable business opportunities.
Our Proposal
Our goal is to create a paradigm shift for business in Papua and West Papua. We believe profitable industry and sustainable conservation are two sides of the same coin: building agricultural value chains into landscapes while also protecting some of the world’s last remaining rainforests. We propose a solution to capture carbon that also offers livelihoods and improved quality of life to many people.

Papua’s remoteness offers a blank canvas for development and a clean slate for green investment. All the tools we need are already in place: vast non-forested land for agriculture, abundant rainfall and sunshine, and a wealth of local experience to draw upon.

With your involvement, we can build agricultural value chains in landscapes that protect forests, capture carbon and deliver an estimated US$150 million in income for 100,000 Papuan farming families. Together with government and donor investments, we can bring inclusive and sustainable growth to Papua.

We have identified and evaluated promising land and marine-based value chains that can be fast-tracked, while others can be built up into sustainable businesses over time.
